Averages are statewide and for guidance — local pumps vary. The U.S. + CA, CO, FL, MA, MN, NY, OH, TX and WA use official EIA weekly data when available; other states use a maintained 2026 baseline until enough community reports build up.
How "live" these prices really are
Honest answer: there is no free, public feed of every gas station's price by the minute — the apps that show that are paid, crowd-sourced products. So Dump the Pump combines the two best signals that are open. The baseline is official weekly retail data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration for the country and the states it covers, which tracks the real direction of prices. The community layer is what drivers report at the pump, aggregated to a rolling 7-day median per state, which catches the local moves official data is too slow or too coarse to show.
Neither is a substitute for the price on the sign in front of you — always check that. But together they're a solid, free read on what gas costs near you today, and they feed directly into the one number that decides whether going electric saves you money.

How current are these gas prices?
The per-state average comes from official weekly data (the U.S. Energy Information Administration) where it's published, or a maintained 2026 baseline elsewhere — so it tracks the real trend, not a one-off snapshot. On top of that, the community median updates the instant a driver reports what they paid, so the local picture can be hours old rather than weeks.
Where do the numbers come from?
Two layers. The baseline is the official EIA weekly retail average for the U.S. and the states EIA covers (California, Colorado, Florida, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Texas, Washington), with a built-in 2026 average for the rest. The "community" figure is a rolling 7-day median of prices submitted by drivers. We don't track individual gas stations.
Why isn't there a price for my exact town?
Averages here are statewide, because that's the level official data is reliable at. Gas can swing a lot between neighbouring towns — so if your local pump is higher or lower, report it. Your submission moves your state's community median and helps the next driver.
Is reporting a price private?
Yes. We store only the price, the state, an optional ZIP, and a timestamp — no name, no account, no free text, nothing that identifies you. Reports are aggregated into a median and capped per visitor to keep the data clean.
