The honest answer is: it depends, and anyone who gives you one clean number is guessing. For most drivers who can charge at home, switching from gas to electric saves somewhere in the low hundreds to well over a thousand dollars a year on fuel alone. But that range is wide for good reasons. Your annual miles, your local gas and electricity prices, and the car you're replacing all push the number up or down. Let's walk through what actually moves it, so you can estimate your own case instead of trusting a headline.
Start with cost per mile, not the sticker
Fuel cost comes down to one simple formula. For gas, it's your price per gallon divided by your mpg. For an EV, it's your price per kWh divided by your efficiency in mi/kWh. Higher mi/kWh means cheaper miles, the same way higher mpg does.
Using US averages, gas at about $3.30 a gallon in a car getting 30 mpg costs roughly $0.11 per mile. An EV charging at home at about $0.17/kWh and getting a typical 3.5 mi/kWh costs about $0.05 per mile. That gap, roughly six cents a mile, is where your savings come from. Multiply it across a year of driving and you have your fuel savings. There's usually a maintenance edge too, on the order of $0.03 per mile, since EVs skip oil changes and have fewer wearing parts. Your annual miles set the scale
Savings are a per-mile advantage multiplied by miles driven, so mileage is the single biggest lever. A typical US driver covers about 12,000 miles a year, but real habits vary a lot.
- Low-mileage (~6,000-8,000 mi): A retiree, a remote worker, or a household second car. At roughly six cents a mile saved on fuel, that's about $360-$480 a year. Real, but modest, and it may take longer to justify a pricier EV purchase.
- Average (~12,000 mi): Roughly $720 a year in fuel at that same gap, before any maintenance savings.
- High-mileage (~15,000-20,000 mi): Long commuters and rideshare drivers. Here the math turns strongly in the EV's favor, roughly $900-$1,200 a year in fuel, and the maintenance gap widens too. The more you drive, the faster you reach break-even.
If you barely drive, don't expect a windfall from fuel alone. If you drive a lot, the case gets compelling fast.
Your state changes the math a lot
Gas prices and electricity rates both swing by geography, and they don't always move together. In a cheap-gas, cheap-power state, the per-mile gap can shrink. In an expensive-gas state where home electricity is still reasonable, the gap widens and your annual savings climb.

What you're replacing matters as much as what you're buying
The EV side of the equation is fairly stable. The gas side is not, because the car you're giving up sets your baseline. Swapping an already-efficient 40 mpg compact for an EV saves less per mile than most people expect. Swapping a thirsty SUV or pickup getting 18-20 mpg saves a lot more, because that vehicle burns far more fuel over the same miles.
So the biggest EV savings usually come from the drivers who need them most: high-mileage households replacing a gas-guzzler in a high-price state. The smallest savings go to low-mileage drivers trading in a fuel-sipper where gas is cheap. Same technology, very different outcomes.
The catch: home charging is doing the heavy lifting
Every savings figure above assumes you mostly charge at home. That assumption is load-bearing. Public DC fast-charging averages around $0.48/kWh, nearly three times the typical home rate. Lean on it and your per-mile cost can climb close to gas, narrowing or even erasing the savings.
Be honest with yourself about where you'll actually charge. If you have a driveway or a reliable home outlet, the numbers above are realistic. If you'd depend on public fast-chargers, run your estimate at those higher rates and expect a much slimmer margin. One more note on incentives: the federal $7,500 EV tax credit ended on September 30, 2025, so don't build your budget around it. The only number that matters is yours.
